Coach of the Month – Norman Viss

Norman VissName:  Norman Viss

Title:  Coach and Founder

Business Name:  Expat Everyday Support Center

Client Testimonials:  http://expateverydaysupportcenter.com/testimonials-2

Niche/Specialties:  We provide coaching support for expats of all kinds – individual expats or those sent by companies or non-profit organizations.

Expat Experience:  I have been an expat for 32 years: 10 years in Nigeria and 22 years in the Netherlands. My coaching partner has been an expat for 20+ years in Bonaire; Columbo, Sri Lanka; and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Languages Spoken:  English and Dutch

Life Experience:  I have been married for 40+ years, and we have three adult children and three grandchildren. I live now in Philadelphia, USA. I enjoy traveling, painting, biking and motorcycle riding.

Accomplishments:  I hold B.A. and Master’s degrees, with majors in cross-cultural and urban studies and theology. In 2009, I completed the Certified Professional Coach Program at the International Coach Academy and I am accredited by the International Coach Federation as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC). I am on the Board of Families in Global Transition.

What I Love About Working in This Niche:  The expat life is one that can be difficult, but it adds a wealth of richness to a person’s life. I love helping people through the difficult cross-cultural moments and helping them see how positive and valuable the expat life is. The “aha moment” when someone sees something in a new light/perspective is my favorite moment!

Coaching Style:  I am a good listener, and because of my own extensive experience as an expat I understand quickly what someone else is experiencing. I tend to ask questions that go beneath the surface to the motivation. If someone is having time management issues, I will ask why he/she is having those issues, rather than just suggesting adjustments to the agenda or “to-do” list. That results in powerful coaching sessions.

Favorite Coaching Tool:  We use an online platform to provide valuable content to our clients. From that platform we can interact in a variety of ways, depending on the needs of the client. Our online platform allows us to have daily interactive contact with a client if that is desired or necessary. Aside from that physical tool I believe in the power of powerful questions, and the impact that “reframing” can have on the outlook of a client, especially in the cross-cultural situation

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach:  I am empathetic and a good listener. I can identify with expat clients. My goal is that the client discover his/her resources to move forward and face challenges positively, by going a bit deeper than just the surface issues.

A Tip for My Niche:  Once an expat, always an expat. The expat experience will change you forever. Do what you need to do to make sure the change is a positive one!
