Title: Coach, Trainer, Speaker

Business Name: Building the Life You Want LLC

Client Testimonials: http://www.buildingthelifeyouwant.com

Niche/Specialties: My favorite topics of conversation are the impact of international change on the leadership style for the executive, on the role and identity of the accompanying spouse, and all the communication adventures that ensue for everyone involved when you move abroad. As a couple. Or a family. Or on your own.

Expat Experience: Born and raised in Germany, I’ve been an expat since 1997 having lived, worked and studied in the UK (Scotland and England), Spain (Barcelona and the Canary Islands), Mexico (Aguascalientes) and the USA (Texas).

Languages Spoken: Plattdeutsch, German, English, Spanish, with a bit of rusty French and a love of Dutch thrown in for good measure.

Life Experience: Career-wise, I’ve worked as an Executive Assistant to CEOs of European multinationals for about eight years before turning my attention to coaching, training, speaking, and facilitating workshops, which I’ve been doing in one form or another since 2005. Otherwise I’m an expat, a traveler, student, daughter, coach, Toastmaster, sister, wife, and friend to many wonderful people!

Accomplishments: Competent Communicator, Advanced Leader Bronze (in the Toastmasters world at least ), 2011 President of the Dallas Chapter for the Association of Psychological Type, accredited coach, a certified MBTI® Step I and II Facilitator, and I hold a BA Honors in Human Resource Management with Spanish. I also presented at FIGT again, a concurrent session on how to choose the right Expat Support Services for your budget, and a crackerbarrel on expat coaching, too.

What I’m hoping to accomplish in the near future, and you can help me with it, is find out how our personality types influence cultural adaptation. When you have a moment, please visit www.expatsmbti.com to participate in a short survey about your personality type / MBTI(r) result and your cross-cultural experience. Thank you!

What I Love About Working in This Niche: Every story is different, every family is different, it’s never dull, and I’m excited to see culture (a)live and in action. Also meeting expats and chatting with them, managing their expectations, preparing them for what’s ahead, and being inspired every day by the resilience and dedication in all of us.

Coaching Style: Pretty direct, but non-directive. My client leads at all times, I ask clarifying questions, and when invited I share my impressions or serve as a mirror.

Favorite Coaching Tool: Ooh, there’s more than one – depends on the situation! I like the Wheel of Life for general stuff like setting goals, Moreno’s Psychodrama for practicing a difficult conversation, the values exercise to clarify someone’s passion, and MBTI® for more specialized awareness about strengths in e.g. careers, and challenges in e.g. dealing with stress or emotional intelligence.

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: I’m told I ask kick-a$$ questions, that even if they’re uncomfortable at the time, they set wheels in motion that result in deeper insights. One client liked how I bring out the bottom line from her stories, and another appreciated my focused organizational skills. Thing is, I’ve chosen them, too, so this is definitely a two-way street. The vibe has to be right, and I work best with motivated people who are ready to take responsibility for their choices.

A Tip for My Niche: “Know thyself.” Be who you are. Don’t change your preferences, have fun with them, and just be open to learning and adding different behaviors to your existing repertoire. (Only if you want to be effective abroad, that is. )

Title: Life Coach and cross cultural trainer

Business Name: Transitions to Africa

Client Testimonials: http://transitionstoafrica.com/transition-and-adaptation-coaching-for-expat-kids/ttp://transitionstoafrica.com/adaptation-coaching/

Niche/Specialties: As a life coach I help expatriate families to create the life they desire while away from Home in Sub-Saharan Africa. I mainly coach accompanying spouses as they have a real task to recreate their lives with every move. I also coach teens though their teenager transition and their international transitions.

As a cross cultural trainer I help people to acknowledge their own cultural baggage in order to receive the one from their host country with a deeper understanding. I’m specialised in African Sub-Saharan countries

Expat Experience: My life abroad started with my birth. I’m Belgian but was born in Morocco. As an adult I lived in India, Guinea-Bissau, Germany, Zambia, South Africa and now in Rwanda. I have been living as an accompanying spouse since 1987 and I’m the mother of 4 TCK (Third Culture Kids). My expat experience has given me to the sweetest and the sourest moments.

Languages Spoken: My native language is French. But living in English-speaking countries led me to become bilingual.

Life Experience and Accomplishments: I have built my life like you make mosaic art work. Every learning, every experience, every encounter gives me something new to add to my mosaic piece. Naturally living as an expat gave me the opportunity to welcome a lot of people. I love meeting people and make them feel at home. My nursing background gives me the skill to nurture and be compassionate to others. My artistic mind gives me the skill to use creativity in everything I do. My training as an art therapist and a life coach gives me the skills to combine my experiences, my passion, my energy with the community I belong; the globally nomad community.

I’m the author of “L’art des Possibles: créer son chemin dans une vie internationale mobile” translated into English as “The Art of Possibilities: Create a path in an international mobile life.” A book helping globally nomadic people to manage the transition in a creative way. An indispensable tool to live through the emotional roller coaster of transition. www.transitionstoafrica.com

I’m the co-author of “Turning points.” 25 women entrepreneurs describe the turning point in life that led them to new rewarding careers and lives. An inspiring and empowering book. www.transitionstoafrica.com

Coaching Style: Creativity is the essence of changes. In a life where everything is unstable (house, environment, language, culture…) people need a great amount of it. This is why creativity is the core of my coaching and training style. I use artistic and creative tools that are accessible to each and every one. In turn these tools develop my client’s creativity and enable them to use it in their daily life.

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: If you are willing to create a rewarding and inspiring life while moving around the world,

If you believe that your own creativity (even if you think you are not creative!) could help you rebounce from every move,

If you are ready to build your own mosaic piece of life that includes who you really are,

Call me for a free discovery session. We will get to meet each other and create a great learning and growing environment.

When one partner is assigned to a new role abroad there are obviously many benefits for all the family particularly the new knowledge and new experiences gained from living in a new country and culture. For the employee there is also the challenge of working in a new environment and gaining the international experience that organizations are increasingly demanding of their employees.

For the partner the assignment may create mixed feelings. Valued careers may have to be left behind and indeed for some it may be impossible to find employment in their host country due to work permit restrictions. Others may view the move abroad as an opportunity for a welcome career break, a chance to take stock, review even retrain. Those with families will perhaps welcome the opportunity to spend more time with their children.

A survey conducted by the Permits Foundation in 2008 found that prior to relocation abroad 90% of accompanying partners were in some form of employment. Post relocation this percentage fell to 35% of all accompanying partners. Taking these figures in isolation it would be easy to surmise that partners were willingly taking the career break opportunities that their expatriation provided.

However this appears to not be the case as the same survey also found that 75% of those partners who were not working whilst abroad stated that they would like to work during the assignment period but were currently not doing so.

So it seems that a large number of accompanying partners would like to work but are not.

· What are the obstacles that are preventing them from doing so?

· What impact does not working have on their sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction with life?

· How do these satisfaction and fulfillment levels compare with those of accompanying partners who are employed whilst abroad?

These are questions that I (Louise Wiles, Success Abroad Coaching) and Evelyn Simpson (The Smart Expat) are interested in answering. We have created a survey which investigates the issues of career choice and the accompanying partner.

The Survey explores three questions:

What career choices do accompanying partners make?

What factors determine and influence the choices that accompanying partners make?

Is there a correlation between accompanying partners’ satisfaction with their career status and their overall satisfaction with their lives?

This research is valuable because the Permit Report also demonstrated that the ability to be employed whilst abroad has a significant impact on the willingness of candidates to accept an assignment, to complete an assignment and to extend an assignment. Understanding the obstacles and factors that partners face in achieving a form of employment whilst abroad will help organizations to provide more timely and appropriate support.

Title: Founder, Executive, Expat and Life Coach

Business Name: Equanimity Executive, LLC

Client Testimonials: www.equanimityexecutive.com

Niche/Specialties: Executive, Expat & Life Coach. I have had remarkable success in assisting others. I focus especially on Executives, Expats, Entrepreneurs and their spouses, and their success in reducing stress and strengthening leadership skills while abroad. My clients are successful and I champion people who want to use their skills to create positive sustainable changes in their lives and this world. My purpose is to assist others, and particularly people who are experiencing the challenges of a new culture, a new language or a new country, to release their stress and frustration in order to fully explore and embrace this extraordinary opportunity. I help our clients to uncover and reach their full potential by shifting their core energy and using the answers lying within them.

Expat Experience: I have lived in France for 30 years and in the US since 2007. My experience with expatriation started many years ago by sharing about culture with my friends, expatriates who always sought assistance and support in overcoming their frustration and their fears. I explored intercultural behaviors and challenges to transition to coaching.

Languages Spoken: English, French

Life Experience: I am an accomplished and successful expatriate who began her intercultural coaching business in 2011 to assist those in the process of making major transitions. My background includes 15 years of leadership experience in the international multicultural European and American corporate worlds. I began my career in customer service management and continued to evolve, developing strong executive leadership skills to become a successful manager in the competitive and fast-moving world of sales management.

I found myself at a crossroads in my personal and professional circumstances in 2005. I felt I had outgrown my life and wanted to make a change. I enlisted the coaching services of a Career Transition and Life Coach to help me to assess the situation. With the help of my coach, I was able to determine the changes I wanted to make, create an action plan, and reach a new set of goals.

In 2006, after completing a degree in International Sourcing and Procurement Management, I prepared to move from Europe to the US. The move involved a major transition and evolution of my mindset in order to integrate with the American culture, values and corporate world.

Being an expatriate myself, I thoroughly and deeply understand the challenges faced by those who consider moving from one culture to another. I have made a success of my international coaching practice because I teach others to transform these challenges into leadership opportunities just as I myself have done.

What I Love About Working in This Niche: I love partnering with people and being witness to their amazing journey. Each of my clients helps me to grow and to remember that we have within us all the resources that we need to make our life a happy success story!

Coaching Style: Meeting my client where they are by adapting and being flexible to my client’s values and agenda.

Favorite Coaching Tool: A.I.R, how to transform your inner critic into your best ally!

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: I attribute my coaching success to a holistic approach that integrates not only the individual and their environment but also inner work to obtain transformational changes. I focus on the critical aspects of helping clients be WHO they are, achieve WHAT they want and IMPLEMENT sustainable changes.

In addition, I am still involved in the corporate world getting new skills and new perspectives, I offer my successful programs and leadership coaching services to executives, expatriates and other clients individually and in groups.

Thanks to Louise Wiles for this gem:

Experiences that become turning points.

“Experience is not what happens to man, it is what a man does with what happens to him”

Aldous Huxley.

This quote totally hits the nail on the head in terms of explaining the value of the experiences shared in the new book Turning Points, which will be launched on November 1st.

The book contains twenty five inspiring stories from twenty five women entrepreneurs who have turned their careers and their lives around. They talk about the point at which they decided to make a change in their lives. For some the turning point came out of adversity; sickness, disability and bereavement, for others it came from more general life events such as relocation, redundancy and motherhood.

Many of the women featured in the book live an international lifestyle and have faced turning points as expatriates living away from their home countries and talk about how their expatriate lifestyle has encouraged and inspired them to re-think their lives and create something new for themselves.

Each women has encountered difficult moments and experiences. They could all have decided to take the easiest course of action – none! But they all chose to take big brave steps, following their hearts and their dreams.

As a result of these events they have found the strength within to move forward, create and give to others. They share their experiences, their lessons and their tips and advice with you.

Some of the main messages are:

Everything happens for a reason

Even if we can’t see what it is at the time or never understand its significance. All the challenges we face and overcome prepare us for the next adventure in life and make us stronger and better equipped to deal with it. The losses, the difficulties, the failures are just steps along the pathway, and the sooner we can learn from them, the sooner we can move on.

The story is always about YOU

Not about other people or circumstances around you. Take ownership for your decisions, your triumphs and your disasters and keep focused on your vision. Be honest with yourself and believe in yourself. Make your development a priority and don’t be afraid to invest in training, coaches, mentors and anything else that helps you understand YOU, then share this with others.

Get help

Don’t think you have to do it all on your own. You need a team around you to support and help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and get others to do the jobs you hate so you are free to concentrate on what you love. Build a network of excellence around you and be prepared to return the favour when needed.

Be bold

Don’t let fear of failure stop you and stand in your way. Think, make decisions and take action based on what you feel to be right for you and not what others tell you. Come from a place of love and be grateful.

Remember you can create your own future

You’re already doing it so get conscious about it and create a positive future. Everything that you can envisage for yourself is possible and can come about so never abandon your dreams but turn them into reality.

Much of the learning and advice contained within the book is very pertinent to the challenges faced by expatriates creating new lives abroad. Looking forward, creating a vision and stepping outside of ones comfort zone with confidence and self belief are some of the methods by which these women have created their own personal brands of success.

How about you what success would you like to create for yourself whilst living abroad?

The book is officially launched on November 1st. Go to this page and buy your copy – you will be enthralled, inspired and encouraged to do the best with your lifetime experiences – your turning points.

In my experience as a foreign exchange specialist, one challenge I see facing expats again and again is getting a good deal when changing currencies.

For instance, I recently spoke to someone moving to France, that purchased about €200,000 to take with them. Had they used their bank, it could have cost £6,000 more than using a foreign exchange broker!

Moreover this is just one piece of the puzzle. There are countless potential pitfalls facing expats that need to send funds abroad. These include avoiding fluctuations in the rate (like we’re seeing at the moment owing to the debt crisis in Europe) and planning in advance.

To help then, please find 5 tips to get better exchange rates below. Each one should make the process of getting a good deal – and avoiding the pitfalls along the path – that much easier!

1. Beware the high street banks

As I mentioned before, one of the biggest pitfalls awaiting expats that need to send money abroad is using a bank. This is because banks depend on the fact that people use them for other financial services, and so provide inferior rates than dedicated foreign exchange brokers.

In fact, using a bank can leave you up to 5.0% worse off than changing with a specialist. In addition, you’re liable to be charged a fee.

2. Plan the transfer in advance

Perhaps the most important tip – aside from that regarding the banks – involves planning. Plan the transfer months before you intend to leave, and you’re in a position to get a much more advantageous rate.

Leave it to the last minute on the other hand, and you have little choice but to receive whatever rate is available at the time.

3. Consider setting up a forward contract

Forward contracts are when you lock in the exchange rate, protecting you against declines in the rate closer to the transfer date. This is ideal for people planning to emigrate, since it means you can receive a superior rate, if you’re concerned it could drop nearer to the time.

For instance, in the present tumultuous financial climate, a forward contract could be ideal to protect against sudden drops on the market.

4. Look out for companies that charge commission

You should not have to pay commission when you send funds abroad. If the business you’re using charges commission, then look elsewhere.

5. Look at sites like the BBC to find out what’s influencing the market

Sites such as the BBC and Google News are ideal for finding what is influencing the markets. For instance, at the moment rumours regarding a two trillion Eurozone rescue fund are boosting confidence, helping the euro.

Knowing this information will help you make a much more informed decision regarding our transfer.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you plan to transfer money abroad, and you should receive a superior rate.

Marketing Yourself the Easy Way

As an expatriate accompanying partner myself, who has moved internationally five times and run a business despite the relocations, I have learned how to market my business efficiently and cheaply. Before the internet I used to develop a local network in each country and then lose all my clients every time we moved. Today, things are very different.

A quick analysis of my current clients and how they came to me reveals how a staggering 95% of them found me through referral. Not through my paid-for advertisements, not through all the flyers I have had printed in full colour and not through the mailshots, cold-calling or other hard sell activities.

I realized a long time ago, that I hated trying to sell services to complete strangers. Fresh out of university, I worked in telesales for a few weeks, selling telephone call monitoring systems of all things. I was not interested in the product. I could not vouch for its effectiveness from personal experience and the people I called were picked from a paid-for list of names and addresses.

One day, six weeks into the job, I found myself on the end of the phone to a man who swore at me for interrupting him. Reduced to tears, I crouched under my desk and sobbed. From that moment I vowed I would only sell to people who had already shown an interest. I promised myself I would never hard sell again.

Today, my business is in helping expatriates to write books that will help or inspire other expats. I run Summertime Publishing and have a vast global network of expat experts able to help, advise or promote my clients’ books. I also write books, and my 28th is out this month. I have learned how to market myself and my books without pain, as I will share below.

Seven Secrets to Simple Self-promotion

I write articles based on my specialism, often without payment, but always for publications on and offline, which are read by my target market. All articles include a few details about me and a web link.

I am clear and focused about what I do so that my message is memorable and I am easy to refer.

I try to exceed my clients’ expectations so that they are delighted to tell other people about me.

I focus not on handing out business cards, but on building relationships. I know that we do business with people we like.

I try to offer free tastes of my service as often as I can, often speaking at networking events and conferences that are attended by my target market. In fact 70% of my clients come to me through this alone.

I use social media often and do my best to give and share what I know at every opportunity.

I pass referrals to other people, recognizing that giving is necessary before I am able to receive.

Title: Culture Transition Strategist

Client Testimonials: http://culturetransition.com/Testimonials.html

Niche/Specialties: I work with Expats and Accompanying spouses on crossing cultures, with a focus on starting a new business, and relocating to New York City.

Expat Experience: I have lived, worked, and studied in France, England, Switzerland and Italy, and traveled all over the world, always in awe of foreign cultures (and sometimes overwhelmed!). There is something magical in the discovery and fear that goes along with transitioning cultures that is a wonderful (ok, sometimes difficult) adjustment process.

Languages Spoken: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese….and let’s not forget Jibberish!

Life Experience: I have almost 20 years corporate experience in Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. I have always needed to be doing at least 2 or 3 things at once, so outside of this I started a business making handbags and jewelry – Heather’s Handbags – where I get to express my creativity. I am also an Advanced Reiki Practitioner and greatly enjoy bringing this wonderful modality to everyone I can.

Accomplishments: In addition to becoming a Certified Professional Coach several years ago (and I literally jumped for joy and screamed with excitement when it happened!) I am honored to serve as Secretary/Membership Director for the New York City chapter of the International Coach Federation this year. I also am greatly enjoying my work with Career Gear where I work with men with difficult pasts to transition into the workplace with job searching and interview strategies. And, I’m very excited to be one of several speakers at this year’s FIGT (Families in Global Transition) conference in March where I will be discussing strategies on How to Start a New Business. OK, and let me not be remiss in saying how excited I was to figure out all the nuances of WordPress to create this new website! THAT was an accomplishment in itself.

What I Love About Working in This Niche: There is an instant bond for me with anyone who has crossed cultures. It requires no words, there is a deep, and rich shared life experience that is very meaningful for me. It’s like we speak our own special language and just “get” one another. I also think the experience of crossing cultures successfully – whether once or several times – leads people to have a certain faith in themselves so that even when times are tough, there is an inner knowing that they still believe in themselves and will accomplish the goals they set forth.

Coaching Style: Playful, intuitive, outside the box, and creative. Where coaching is concerned I connect deeply with my clients. When intuition strikes, I bring it into the coaching process, and where brainstorming comes into play, I open doors for clients with infinite ideas and possibilities to accomplish their goals.

Favorite Coaching Tool: At the moment, the Points of You Coaching Game. It is such fun, and really useful for bringing clients outside the barriers their minds create and into a more imaginative and creative space.

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: I’ve heard comments from, “I love your energy and how you are involved in so many things” to “I always feel charged up and motivated after I talk to you!” Most clients seem to enjoy my expertise, my excitement, and my belief in them accomplishing their goals.

A Tip for My Niche: When starting a business GO FOR IT. Try not to get caught up in the trap of “I can’t network till I have my website up” “I can’t give anyone my website address till it’s perfect” and any of those other slogans we create to keep ourselves from going out in the world and just doing it.
