Title: Expat Coach

Business Name: Stepping Forward Coaching

Client Testimonials: http://www.coachingwithmargie.com

Niche/Specialties: Expats abroad not supported by large corporations; for example: accompanying spouses / family members, cross-cultural marriages, international students, retirees.

Expat Experience: I’m an American who has lived in Russia and Japan. I’m also married to a Russian (for nearly 2 decades now!) and have experienced the added challenge of cross-cultural communication in a relationship.

Languages Spoken: English (coaching language), Japanese, Russian

Life Experience: I was raised hearing stories from my great-aunt who was an expat in South America in the 1950′s and from my mother who was an expat in New Zealand in the 1960′s – I suspect this set me on my own path before I was old enough to even realize that mono-culturality is the norm for many. I’m following a varied and fascinating route through life – one where there’s always been an aspect of multiculturalism. To name a few stops along my journey’s way thus far: high school and university exchange student. Marriage to a European. Involvement in a Russian-American fishing venture. Serving as a translator and an interpreter (both Russian & Japanese). Volunteer coordinator/advisor for foreign exchange students and their American host families. Custom travel specialist for an international tour operator. Informal support and advisor to many who have found themselves feeling like a fish out of water in an unfamiliar cultural situation. And finally – the culmination of this life experience! – business owner and Expat Coach with Stepping Forward Coaching.

Accomplishments: I could make a traditional list of academic and business oriented achievements, but the accomplishments that are truly important to me are the ones where I feel I’ve impacted others in a positive manner. Drawing others into my cross-cultural comfort zone to introduce them to what I love about all aspects of our world. Supporting others in finding their personal balance in challenging situations. Listening to what others have to say and acknowledging their worth. When I get a call or a letter or hear through the grapevine that some past action on my part changed someone’s life for the better, these are the accomplishments I’m proudest to leave as my legacy.

What I Love About Working in This Niche: Those of us in this niche often find ourselves abroad due to a personal choice and quite often this choice has led to a long-term, if not permanent, relocation. It’s not enough to ‘tough it out’ when there’s not going to be a repatriation in the near future. I love working with people in this niche, watching how coaching together supports them in moving beyond merely surviving to fully thriving in their chosen lives.

Coaching Style: I’m often told that my style is calm and my voice, soothing. I feel that is a good characterization of my coaching approach. Nonetheless, I don’t shy away from the tough questions. Together we create a safe space to address the issues at the heart of the matter in order to reveal the steps needed to get you to where you want to be.

Favorite Coaching Tool: “What if…” All too often we discount possible options because we ‘already know’ they won’t work. It’s a simple tool, but employing the concept of “What if…” allows us to enter into a hypothetical world where constraints and obstacles do not exist. The answers we find are often surprisingly simple – and in retrospect, obvious. We simply don’t see them until we allow ourselves to let go of all our pre-determined – and limiting – objections with the question “what if.”

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: Clients might initially approach me because they’re ready to move beyond simply surviving in their cross-cultural environment and want some help doing so. The ones that ultimately choose me as their coach do so because we feel the type of rapport that allows for trust, a key ingredient in any coaching relationship.

A Tip for My Niche: Rather than focusing on the doors that are closed, start looking for the windows that are open.

Who are you going to listen to for parenting advice? Will you follow Amy Chua’s disciplined approach from her book “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother?” Will you follow Pamela Druckerman’s approach from her book “Bringing Up Bebe?”

I have lived in Asia and Europe with my children and have witnessed the Asian and European approach to parenting. Both are interesting and have benefits. Why do we look to culture to give us parenting tips? We all share a common human nature and we are, in general, social beings. Culture is an important aspect of each an every one of us. Having had the global experience as well as being a first generation Asian brought up in the United States, I feel that the best approach for parenting advice may be turning to brain science.

There is much research in regards to brain development and growing children. How can we disregard how science plays into the role of raising children?

Science tells us that the brain’s number one function is survival. In order for our children to learn and grow, we must surround them with safe environments. Ask yourself, are we doing this? Are our homes, schools, parks and other environments safe? Are our children exposed to yelling, domestic violence, or worse? Let’s ensure our child’s environment is safe so that the brain can let go of its preoccupation for survival.

Once we do this, we can create an optimal environment for learning. This includes allowing our children to explore indoors and outdoors, allowing for creativity, and teaching good communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.

Teaching self-regulation is also important and may be your child’s greatest predictor of academic and social success. Self-regulation is a person’s ability to regulate one’s thinking, emotions, and behavior.
Thinking: Children need down time so they can reflect and listen to their self-talk. Are you always hovering around your children or do you allow them time and space to be on their own, focus, and think? No two brains develop at the same rate. We must be careful that we do not put extreme expectations on our children. Extreme will be different for each child. The concern is not to put ‘stress’ on the brain so that it goes back to focusing only on survival.

Emotions: We need to model emotional regulation. What emotions are we comfortable with having and expressing? What emotions are we not comfortable with? Do you know your child’s emotional landscape? According to science, there is 20% chance you will have a child that is anxious or irritable. Behavior: We need to be firm in our discipline. Involving a child in rule making is empowering to the child and he or she will more likely follow the rule. Rules should be delivered in a warm, safe environment.

Regardless of what culture you grew up in and regardless of what culture you are raising your children in, creating an environment of safety and then creating an optimal environment for learning can happen anywhere.

In looking at parenting tips from the lens of brain development, what will be your next step?

Nita Talwar is a PCI-certified parent coach and the official workshop facilitator for Dr. John Medina’s Brain Rules for Baby. The source for many of the views and facts expressed here come from the Parent Coaching Institute and Brain Rules for Baby as well as her own experience living on 3 continents. Her website is at www.peakexperienceparenting.com

Title: Certified Professional Coach

Business Name: Zencompass

.

Client Testimonials: I am not sure I believe in them…

Niche/Specialties: Expats, Women, Accompanying Spouses and Expat Relationships

Expat Experience: I have lived in 5 countries (New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, India and the USA), worked, travelled and played in 26 countries and have moved 22 times in 29 years.

Languages Spoken: Chronically monolingual unfortunately – English

Life Experience: I was born in New Zealand and made Australia my home of choice many years ago so I know one day I will begin the repatriation challenges many expats face when they decide to stop their gypsy ways!

I trained as a teacher and have taught, lectured, trained and facilitated for over 20 years. Whilst living in Malaysia I gained a Masters in Social Science and then became a Certified Professional Coach during a later move to Houston. My passions include singing in a band and a choir, traveling (go figure!), climbing and trekking in the great outdoors (including Borneo, Mt Fuji and recently New Zealand), yoga, lifelong learning and really getting to know my fellow human beings. I truly understand every level of challenge that expats face.

My earliest expat memory is standing paralyzed with fear at a local Chinese Market because I lost sight of my husband and had absolutely no idea which way home was! Where had my tough managerial image and sense of self gone? It took me a while to claw it back but I have and if I can anyone can. believe me.

Accomplishments: Apart from giving birth to two amazing children I attained my Masters in Counseling and became a certified coach and sing in a classic rock band and the United Nations International Choir. I am thrilled to be a part of the newly launched (and developing) expaTView where Renee Lederman and I interview expats, experts and specialists in the global mobility field to help expat women rise above a life interrupted. I also set myself the challenge to write 365 blog tips in 365 days last year as a ‘practice what you preach’ objective – and actually did it.

What I Love About Working in This Niche: I believe expat women are an untapped resource. These vibrant, intelligent women have overcome many obstacles and challenges to live life as they do – plus they have the potential to make a huge difference all over the world because of who they are. Being part of that change process is simply exhilarating and my challenge is to help them see themselves the way I see them.

Coaching Style: To me it is all about the relationship – most people never get listened to or feel truly heard and understood. I think coaches could almost get by on heartfelt listening alone. Ask the hard questions, let silence do the heavy lifting and believe the client has the answers and you have all the right extraction tools.

Favorite Coaching Tool: I know I should say some NLP or ELP or QRST personality tool but quite simply it is acknowledgement and validation. I truly hear you, what you are experiencing is both real, and really tough, and it is taking its toll on you. You are certainly not the only one who has ever felt like this and you have begun the journey back.

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: Because that’s the way it is meant to be.

A Tip for My Niche: Be yourself and learn to like who you are right now. You are powerful because you hold your family together even when all around you feels foreign. You can’t fix everything, you may never get used to where you are, but you can find the hidden gems and most importantly, you are not a bad person for not always appreciating this ‘wonderful opportunity life has presented you’.

Niche/Specialties: My favorite topics of conversation are the impact of international change on the leadership style for the executive, on the role and identity of the accompanying spouse, and all the communication adventures that ensue for everyone involved when you move abroad. As a couple. Or a family. Or on your own.

Expat Experience: Born and raised in Germany, I’ve been an expat since 1997 having lived, worked and studied in the UK (Scotland and England), Spain (Barcelona and the Canary Islands), Mexico (Aguascalientes) and the USA (Texas).

Languages Spoken: Plattdeutsch, German, English, Spanish, with a bit of rusty French and a love of Dutch thrown in for good measure.

Life Experience: Career-wise, I’ve worked as an Executive Assistant to CEOs of European multinationals for about eight years before turning my attention to coaching, training, speaking, and facilitating workshops, which I’ve been doing in one form or another since 2005. Otherwise I’m an expat, a traveler, student, daughter, coach, Toastmaster, sister, wife, and friend to many wonderful people!

Accomplishments: Competent Communicator, Advanced Leader Bronze (in the Toastmasters world at least ), 2011 President of the Dallas Chapter for the Association of Psychological Type, accredited coach, a certified MBTI® Step I and II Facilitator, and I hold a BA Honors in Human Resource Management with Spanish. I also presented at FIGT again, a concurrent session on how to choose the right Expat Support Services for your budget, and a crackerbarrel on expat coaching, too.

What I’m hoping to accomplish in the near future, and you can help me with it, is find out how our personality types influence cultural adaptation. When you have a moment, please visit www.expatsmbti.com to participate in a short survey about your personality type / MBTI(r) result and your cross-cultural experience. Thank you!

What I Love About Working in This Niche: Every story is different, every family is different, it’s never dull, and I’m excited to see culture (a)live and in action. Also meeting expats and chatting with them, managing their expectations, preparing them for what’s ahead, and being inspired every day by the resilience and dedication in all of us.

Coaching Style: Pretty direct, but non-directive. My client leads at all times, I ask clarifying questions, and when invited I share my impressions or serve as a mirror.

Favorite Coaching Tool: Ooh, there’s more than one – depends on the situation! I like the Wheel of Life for general stuff like setting goals, Moreno’s Psychodrama for practicing a difficult conversation, the values exercise to clarify someone’s passion, and MBTI® for more specialized awareness about strengths in e.g. careers, and challenges in e.g. dealing with stress or emotional intelligence.

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: I’m told I ask kick-a$$ questions, that even if they’re uncomfortable at the time, they set wheels in motion that result in deeper insights. One client liked how I bring out the bottom line from her stories, and another appreciated my focused organizational skills. Thing is, I’ve chosen them, too, so this is definitely a two-way street. The vibe has to be right, and I work best with motivated people who are ready to take responsibility for their choices.

A Tip for My Niche: “Know thyself.” Be who you are. Don’t change your preferences, have fun with them, and just be open to learning and adding different behaviors to your existing repertoire. (Only if you want to be effective abroad, that is. )

Title: Life Coach and cross cultural trainer

Business Name: Transitions to Africa

Niche/Specialties: As a life coach I help expatriate families to create the life they desire while away from Home in Sub-Saharan Africa. I mainly coach accompanying spouses as they have a real task to recreate their lives with every move. I also coach teens though their teenager transition and their international transitions.

As a cross cultural trainer I help people to acknowledge their own cultural baggage in order to receive the one from their host country with a deeper understanding. I’m specialised in African Sub-Saharan countries

Expat Experience: My life abroad started with my birth. I’m Belgian but was born in Morocco. As an adult I lived in India, Guinea-Bissau, Germany, Zambia, South Africa and now in Rwanda. I have been living as an accompanying spouse since 1987 and I’m the mother of 4 TCK (Third Culture Kids). My expat experience has given me to the sweetest and the sourest moments.

Languages Spoken: My native language is French. But living in English-speaking countries led me to become bilingual.

Life Experience and Accomplishments: I have built my life like you make mosaic art work. Every learning, every experience, every encounter gives me something new to add to my mosaic piece. Naturally living as an expat gave me the opportunity to welcome a lot of people. I love meeting people and make them feel at home. My nursing background gives me the skill to nurture and be compassionate to others. My artistic mind gives me the skill to use creativity in everything I do. My training as an art therapist and a life coach gives me the skills to combine my experiences, my passion, my energy with the community I belong; the globally nomad community.

I’m the author of “L’art des Possibles: créer son chemin dans une vie internationale mobile” translated into English as “The Art of Possibilities: Create a path in an international mobile life.” A book helping globally nomadic people to manage the transition in a creative way. An indispensable tool to live through the emotional roller coaster of transition. www.transitionstoafrica.com

I’m the co-author of “Turning points.” 25 women entrepreneurs describe the turning point in life that led them to new rewarding careers and lives. An inspiring and empowering book. www.transitionstoafrica.com

Coaching Style: Creativity is the essence of changes. In a life where everything is unstable (house, environment, language, culture…) people need a great amount of it. This is why creativity is the core of my coaching and training style. I use artistic and creative tools that are accessible to each and every one. In turn these tools develop my client’s creativity and enable them to use it in their daily life.

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: If you are willing to create a rewarding and inspiring life while moving around the world,

If you believe that your own creativity (even if you think you are not creative!) could help you rebounce from every move,

If you are ready to build your own mosaic piece of life that includes who you really are,

Call me for a free discovery session. We will get to meet each other and create a great learning and growing environment.

When one partner is assigned to a new role abroad there are obviously many benefits for all the family particularly the new knowledge and new experiences gained from living in a new country and culture. For the employee there is also the challenge of working in a new environment and gaining the international experience that organizations are increasingly demanding of their employees.

For the partner the assignment may create mixed feelings. Valued careers may have to be left behind and indeed for some it may be impossible to find employment in their host country due to work permit restrictions. Others may view the move abroad as an opportunity for a welcome career break, a chance to take stock, review even retrain. Those with families will perhaps welcome the opportunity to spend more time with their children.

A survey conducted by the Permits Foundation in 2008 found that prior to relocation abroad 90% of accompanying partners were in some form of employment. Post relocation this percentage fell to 35% of all accompanying partners. Taking these figures in isolation it would be easy to surmise that partners were willingly taking the career break opportunities that their expatriation provided.

However this appears to not be the case as the same survey also found that 75% of those partners who were not working whilst abroad stated that they would like to work during the assignment period but were currently not doing so.

So it seems that a large number of accompanying partners would like to work but are not.

· What are the obstacles that are preventing them from doing so?

· What impact does not working have on their sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction with life?

· How do these satisfaction and fulfillment levels compare with those of accompanying partners who are employed whilst abroad?

These are questions that I (Louise Wiles, Success Abroad Coaching) and Evelyn Simpson (The Smart Expat) are interested in answering. We have created a survey which investigates the issues of career choice and the accompanying partner.

The Survey explores three questions:

What career choices do accompanying partners make?

What factors determine and influence the choices that accompanying partners make?

Is there a correlation between accompanying partners’ satisfaction with their career status and their overall satisfaction with their lives?

This research is valuable because the Permit Report also demonstrated that the ability to be employed whilst abroad has a significant impact on the willingness of candidates to accept an assignment, to complete an assignment and to extend an assignment. Understanding the obstacles and factors that partners face in achieving a form of employment whilst abroad will help organizations to provide more timely and appropriate support.

If you are a coach or relocation specialist who works with accompanying partners then we would greatly appreciated your help in forwarding this article and survey link on to them and asking if they would be prepared to participate in the survey.

If you are an accompanying partner currently living abroad then please go to this LINK and complete the survey. It will take only 15 minutes and is completely anonymous.

We greatly appreciate your help. If you would like us to send a copy of the survey results to you then please contact Louise and include SURVEY RESULTS REQUEST in the title of your email.

Title: Founder, Executive, Expat and Life Coach

Business Name: Equanimity Executive, LLC

Client Testimonials: www.equanimityexecutive.com

Niche/Specialties: Executive, Expat & Life Coach. I have had remarkable success in assisting others. I focus especially on Executives, Expats, Entrepreneurs and their spouses, and their success in reducing stress and strengthening leadership skills while abroad. My clients are successful and I champion people who want to use their skills to create positive sustainable changes in their lives and this world. My purpose is to assist others, and particularly people who are experiencing the challenges of a new culture, a new language or a new country, to release their stress and frustration in order to fully explore and embrace this extraordinary opportunity. I help our clients to uncover and reach their full potential by shifting their core energy and using the answers lying within them.

Expat Experience: I have lived in France for 30 years and in the US since 2007. My experience with expatriation started many years ago by sharing about culture with my friends, expatriates who always sought assistance and support in overcoming their frustration and their fears. I explored intercultural behaviors and challenges to transition to coaching.

Languages Spoken: English, French

Life Experience: I am an accomplished and successful expatriate who began her intercultural coaching business in 2011 to assist those in the process of making major transitions. My background includes 15 years of leadership experience in the international multicultural European and American corporate worlds. I began my career in customer service management and continued to evolve, developing strong executive leadership skills to become a successful manager in the competitive and fast-moving world of sales management.

I found myself at a crossroads in my personal and professional circumstances in 2005. I felt I had outgrown my life and wanted to make a change. I enlisted the coaching services of a Career Transition and Life Coach to help me to assess the situation. With the help of my coach, I was able to determine the changes I wanted to make, create an action plan, and reach a new set of goals.

In 2006, after completing a degree in International Sourcing and Procurement Management, I prepared to move from Europe to the US. The move involved a major transition and evolution of my mindset in order to integrate with the American culture, values and corporate world.

Being an expatriate myself, I thoroughly and deeply understand the challenges faced by those who consider moving from one culture to another. I have made a success of my international coaching practice because I teach others to transform these challenges into leadership opportunities just as I myself have done.

What I Love About Working in This Niche: I love partnering with people and being witness to their amazing journey. Each of my clients helps me to grow and to remember that we have within us all the resources that we need to make our life a happy success story!

Coaching Style: Meeting my client where they are by adapting and being flexible to my client’s values and agenda.

Favorite Coaching Tool: A.I.R, how to transform your inner critic into your best ally!

Why Clients Choose Me As Their Coach: I attribute my coaching success to a holistic approach that integrates not only the individual and their environment but also inner work to obtain transformational changes. I focus on the critical aspects of helping clients be WHO they are, achieve WHAT they want and IMPLEMENT sustainable changes.

In addition, I am still involved in the corporate world getting new skills and new perspectives, I offer my successful programs and leadership coaching services to executives, expatriates and other clients individually and in groups.
